Dev Build Update: Character Matchup Stats (Aug 28, 2024)

Hey everyone!

With this patreon build, character stats are finally in the Smashers App!

So what's in it?

There's now a new view for character matchups in the app which supports 3 major matchup types, as detailed in the graphic below:

For a given player, this lets you narrow in on the matchup you're looking for and shows you:

• What characters do they play as/vs in this matchup?
• What opponents do they play against and how do they do?
• What were their recent sets and their biggest upsets for/against in this matchup?

Plus, you can filter these data types to be offline only, ranked, or at majors. This will help you filter out online results and locals.

But what about missing character data?

Since many TOs don't report full character data for their events, character stats for players can often be distorted and not super useful. In order to address this, we provide a "Fallback to mains" option which fills in any missing character data from startgg with player's smashers app mains. This isn't 100% accurate, but it does make the data more useful

For example, here's Akakikusu's character stats when only using reported data and when "fallback to mains" is enabled. This setting reveals he's played quite a few top snake players like Apollokage, Dio, and Shogun that otherwise would have flown under the radar.

Other things to know

• Character stats are only available from the player overview right now. We'll be integrating them into h2hs and the opponent's tab on the player page in the future
• Character stats aren't available on the website yet
• "Fallback to mains" currently can create impossible matchups for DLC characters on historical data (ie: playing vs a Steve main before the Steve DLC was released). We hope to fix this in a future update by adding mains for periods of time.

So what's next?

For character data, the next step is adding it to the h2h view! We also plan on adding more overview stats like stages, character switching, and Bo3/Bo5 analysis.

Beyond that, we're working on getting the Patreon Fantasy League started for the month of September. We're also busy working on a good bracket for the event page on the desktop website.
