Japan's New Default Ranking: JSR

Supermajor

4/21/2026

Hey everyone!

Last week we switched Japan's primary ranking from UltRank to the Japan Smash Ranking (JSR). It is currently on its 7th iteration, with v1 covering the second half of 2022. Check out Toki's blog to learn more about the ranking.

Why the switch?

When we first launched power rankings support, we received immediate pushback from the European scene against the use of UltRank Europe as their regional defacto ranking. European players felt UltRank didn't accurately reflect their scene, which the UltRank team reciprocated by using the EUPR's panel based ranking for UltRank TTS player values. While there wasn't similar pushback for Japan's ranking, we feel switching to a Japanese ranking for Japan should also better represent their players.

What this means for users

  • You can check out the new rankings here.
  • Ranking labels like JP #83 now reflect JSR placement instead of UltRank Japan.
  • UltRank's Japan ranking is still available as a tertiary fallback and will show up as UR JP #105 though we may remove this in the future.
